Coaching is a method of productive, motivating dialogue about any topic. Coaches know amazing questions that can spur new thinking. In practice, coaching most often is acquired for times when you need to meet goals for your workplace, or for your life. That is: for business reasons your employer invests in your retention, performance or their succession plans. Or personally, you are seeking a better way to live your life.
Career management is a business discipline; an established, cyclical process which equips you to invent, choose, lead, maximize and protect your next career- and income-improving move - a promotion, better job, new career or small business with sales. Its senior practitioners show you how to actually achieve career and income improvements in a realistic time frame - months or years sooner than you assumed was possible or may be experiencing right now without specialist advice.
Because you're above $100K, career ownership is more than counting on a string of job openings working out. A self-concept must be sharpened (your value isn't about your past jobs), a reputation tastefully maintained, time conserved, a strategic mindset built, historic information only judiciously released, recruiters if involved need to be deftly managed, a network sensitively yet proactively handled, relevance must be mutually pinpointed rather than guessed at or pitched, and salary negotiations will occur. All of these career self-leadership actions speed the way to each job or business you gain, and pay you in equity - career-easing access, best compensation and uncommon career freedoms.
If a corporate, executive or life coach is aware of the career management process, it isn't their purpose, expertise or interest. For example, a coach helps someone decide they will find a new career direction, then that person has me advise and direct their plans and actions so what they need gets imaginatively, credibly, safely achieved in reality, and is well paid.
When you want and need a next phase to your work, and it's your own agenda rather than your employer's, that's my core expertise. Career Equity TM achieves all this in an end-to-end, career self-leadership process validated with thousands of individuals.
Coaches refer their clients here, and a few of my clients accept a workplace coach or hire a personal coach at the same time as I'm advising them.
Coaches also retain my advice and system to help them grow their own careers and businesses.
Confusingly, lately we hear the label career coach. Professionally, that has no specific meaning. It's a phrase that's caught on because of the reality that you do need to run your career. When a coach picks careers as their focus, they mean either they specialize in workplace communication, or they know some of the tasks of the job hunt, career change or self employment. I monitor how such coaches get trained, and I can say generally they aren't taught that career management is a process which exists - only some of its conventional chores such as resumes or isolated parts such as branding. They deposit you on the left hand side of the Career EquityTM value chart, where my system begins.
